Portraits in Oil

I am now taking my love of portrait drawing a step further by painting portraits with oil paint! For our last painting project at North Greenville we got to work on painting each other! It was a lot of fun. I was curious to see how I would be able to paint people, as well as draw them. We started out by doing a sort of “underpainting” where we covered the entire canvas with a dark brown tone and wiped away the highlights. You can see what it looked like in the one I did of my classmate at the bottom. For our out of class project we did a 3/4 view of our sitter, and so I chose to paint my brother. He sat very patiently as he read a book. 😉

Painting in Oil

At North Greenville, for our landscape project we were able to go outside and paint en plein air. It was a lot of fun. We used mainly our palette knife to first mix the colours and then apply them straight onto the canvas. In this excercise we wanted to actually show texture and brush strokes, which also gave it a rather impressionistic approach.

Colour Oil Paintings

At North Greenville we were working on painting still lifes in colour. In this exercise we learned how to mix the paint to get the exact colours we wanted and also to use the complement of a colour to create the shadows. These were fun projects to do.

Black and White Oil Paintings

One of the classes I’m taking this semester at North Greenville University is Painting I, where we’re painting still lifes in oil. In our first project we were learning about value by painting white objects in front of a black background. The painting of the shapes was the one I worked on in class, and the bird one I did out of class. This is the first time I’ve used oil paint. I’m really enjoying it.
